Unfortunately Art crashed on the 10th lap and finished in the 24th and final spot. He was awarded $991.00 and Al Unser won the race.
Ad taken from page 1 of the 1971 CAL 500 Program April 25, 1971 - At Trenton for the 200, Art started the #8 Gilmore Racing Scorpion70 Ford 18th. He finished well in 6th, six laps down to race winner Mike Mosley. Art won 160 points and $2,887.00.

He ran only 45 laps before a dropped valve in the #64 Gilmore Racing Scorpion70 Ford (shown above) forced him from the greatest race. Art finished 26th and won $14,770.00 in prize money. Al Unser became a back to back 500 winner on this day. Earlier in the month Art was on the Today Show with Joe Garagiola and Hugh Downs (shown below). Hugh Downs even took some laps around the Brickyard in the Gilmore Indy car.
Photos courtesy of Mike Pollard June 6, 1971 - At Milwaukee, Art picked up a top ten finish and a new teammate. Art started the #8 Gilmore Racing Scorpion70 Ford 15th and finished 5th. New teammate Jimmy Caruthers drove the #64 Gilmore Racing Scorpion70 Ford to a 12th place finish. Al Unser won the race and Art collected 150 points and $3,651.00.
Photo courtesy of Mike Pollard July 3, 1971 - In a race of attrition at the new Pocono Speedway in Pennsylvania, Art started 25th and finished 16th after 171 laps with a leaking oil tank on the #8 Gilmore Racing Scorpion70 Ford. (shown above) Teammate Jimmy Caruthers (shown below) finished 13th in the 64 car. Mark Donohue won the race and Art won $6,199.00.

Art won $1,253.00 and Mark Donohue finished first for the second race in a row. August 15, 1971 - At the Milwaukee Mile Art started the #8 Gilmore Racing Scorpion70 Ford 16th and finished 16th after a dropped valve on lap 138. Art won $976.00 for this race and Bobby Unser was the winner.
September 5, 1971 - Second place in a row for Art at OMS in the California 500 (shown above). Art started his #8 Gilmore Racing Scorpion70 Ford in 13th and finished 2nd again to race winner and former teammate Joe Leonard. Art nabbed 800 Championship points and $71,287.00.

October 3, 1971 - Trenton again. Art started the #8 Gilmore Racing Scorpion70 Ford 9th but after a broken valve on lap 93 he ended up in 20th. Joe Leonard clinched the National Championship, Bobby Unser won the race, and Art won $1,176.00. October 23, 1971 - In the final race of the season at Phoenix, Art qualified the #8 Gilmore Racing Scorpion70 Ford 16th and finished 2 laps down in 9th. A.J. Foyt was the race winner. Art won 60 points and $1,961.00 and ended up 11th in the USAC National points standings.

He considered it a privilege to go over and talk with them and encourage them.
